Secret Weapon: Simple Artwork

I wish I were someone who could whip up cool artwork when I’m creating a new effect, but I’m not. So I have to find some other solution.

Here’s a place I go back to again and again:

The Noun Project

While they do offer photos, I go there for the icons. Zillions of icons covering just about every topic you can think of.

Best thing? FREE.

Well, not all of the icons, but the vast majority of them have Creative Commons licenses on them, which means you can use the artwork as long as you attribute the artist.

Here’s an example:

I just downloaded that and in order to be “legal” I only need to add this:
magic by glyph.faisalovers from Noun Project

But I don’t have to attribute that right here — If I wanted to use that on a card in an effect, I’d list the attributions for each of the icons I used in the instructions for that effect. Here’s what that section looks like from my effect, Layne’s Nightmare:

You may need more involved artwork for the effect you’re creating, but if simple line drawings are all you need, you can save money and time by checking out the icons at The Noun Project.

(Be sure to look at the license for each of the icons you use — some of them vary. Some of them don’t require any attribution, but most that I’ve seen do.)
