Another use for ChatGPT
While not every effect I perform has to have a story attached to it, most of them do. Sometimes, such as with Commune Contraband, the story fits a specific trick really well. But other times I need to work a little harder.
For example, here’s something that happened to me long ago…
When I was about 9 years old I overheard my Mom tell my older brother “Don’t sleep with a girl, you’ll get her pregnant!”
A couple days later Mom dropped me off at her friend’s house while she went shopping. After lunch the friend decided it was nap time, so she put 9-year old me and her 4-year old daughter down to sleep — on the same bed!
I had no clue how the whole pregnant thing worked — all I knew was what I heard my Mom say, “Don’t sleep with a girl, you’ll get her pregnant!”
I was terrified. Little Sherrie fell asleep right away, but I pressed myself up against the wall and forced myself to stay awake until nap time was over. I’m proud to say I did not fall asleep and so did not get her pregnant.
It’s a cute little story but does NOT cause an existing effect to spring to my mind. Then I got to thinking, what is the story actually about, and so I copied it into Chatty (ChatGPT) and asked for lessons that could be learned from the story. a few seconds later I had this:
Misinterpretation of Information.
Lack of knowledge led to unnecessary fear and anxiety.
A seemingly innocent statement can have unintended consequences.
Shows critical thinking, albeit based on a misunderstanding.
Underscores the impact that lack of information and misunderstandings can have on a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
Reflecting on such events from a different perspective can lead to laughter and a lighthearted outlook on life.
Okay, that has now given me something that’s easier to work with. Reading through that list makes me think I could come up with several effects that relate to the lesson of the story, not exactly to the story itself. I can tell the story, and then follow up with, “I had a 9-year old brain and while I showed critical thinking, my lack of knowledge caused unnecessary fear….”
“AI Is Useless for Magic Scripting”
I’ve heard that from people multiple times. And while it’s often true right now if you want a fully finished script, I think AI tools like ChatGPT can be incredibly useful as brainstorming tools to help you create scripts.
I’m still working on an effect for this story and when I finalize something I’ll come back here and update this.
